ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC RESOURCES: POLICIES AND GUIDELINES
EZproxy is the preferred option for off-campus access to Rice University's licensed online resources. Licenses with our commercial and scholarly publishers define how the resources may be accessed and used:

  • Use should be restricted to academic research and teaching;
  • Systematic downloading of resources is prohibited;
  • Content should not be made available on servers/websites that are openly accessible, nor should copyright marks be obstructed or removed;
  • Use is subject to University policies, including Appropriate Use of Computer Resources and Intellectual Property Policy.

WHAT BROWSER DO I NEED TO USE?
EZproxy is mostly browser independent, but you should be using the most current version of your favorite browser to get maximum functionality from the databases you use. Disable pop-up blockers in your browser and enable cookies and JavaScript. Go to the download sites of the respective browsers to get a more current or different version, e.g.: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari.

EZPROXY AND PROPRIETARY BROWSERS, LIKE AOL
The current AOL browser does not work with EZproxy or other library proxies. Other proprietary browsers like MSN and Compuserve may not work either. To get around this, AOL and some other users need to download Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. After installing the second browser, they connect to the Internet with the AOL browser, minimize it, and launch the new browser for database searching with EZproxy.

CAN I USE EZPROXY WITH FREE ISPs?
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) include use of an accelerator, such as NetOne, NetZero, HiSpeed, Google Accelerator, and Firefox DownThemAll, which need to be turned off before EZproxy will work. (Essentially, accelerators are using their own proxy to run things.) You can also download a second browser (see above) to make this work.

ALUMNI AND EZPROXY ACCESS
Rice alumni with accounts on the Alumni Portal are automatically allowed to access a few of the university's licensed electronic resources through the EZproxy server. If you are seeing this message, it means that your session with the EZproxy server has expired due to inactivity. To regain access, please re-enter through the Alumni Portal (https://online.alumni.rice.edu) using your alumni login credentials and click again on the link for the digital resources that you are interested in.
